Sugar Block Club quilttop

Hi, I'm back! Not sure why I didn't blog for a while, it wasn't for the lack of sewing or other activities. Maybe it was because of the other activities, house remodeling for instance. That was probably it.

I have finished the quilttop with my Sugar Blocks. Here it is.

I used the blocks that I made in the Sugar Block Club as the outer border. The little blocks in the middle are from my pile of Farmer's Wife Quilt blocks. I picked the sweetest blocks I had made. I also added two pieces I cut from a cross stitched table cloth I found at a thrift store. I fused interfacing to the back of the table cloth before I cut it.

I love my sugary quilt top. It will have to wait to be finished until after we move to our new home. It won't be long now, five or six weeks...

Last of the Sugar Blocks

Whoops, I almost forgot to show the last block of the Sugar Block Club here. I had shown it on Instagram, but it needs a post here too. Here is Still

I loved making the blocks in this club. The name of the club inspired me to make the blocks very sweet and sugary, which I loved doing. It is such a girly color scheme, normally I'd think twice about allowing myself to go that far into the sweetness. But here it was okay.

I have 12 blocks now. I think I will use them as a border around a super sweet 24"  x 24" block that I'll think up soon. Something floral or with another sweet theme.

 

November Sugar Block Club

Listen is the name of this month's Sugar Block. Here's my version:

After this block there is only one more to go this year. I plan on finishing these blocks as a quilt after Christmas, no rushing. I'm thinking about using the twelve blocks as a large border around a large center block that should also have a sweet and sugary theme. Something übercute and pastelly, kittens and candy... but with a little spice or tang. I'll have to start thinking and drawing.

My October Sugarblock

Peace is the name of this month's pattern in the Sugar Block Club. That wasn't easy, to be peaceful after I first made the block. I made it following the pattern but it didn't come out as it should have. Sure it looked fine. The points looked pointy and everything, but the block was too big. I don't know if it was something in the pattern or if I was sewing seams that were too scant, but several eighths of inches can add up to a block that would be really hard to match to the other blocks in a finished quilt. What I did after a couple of days was take the whole block apart and cut a sliver of all sides of the four hourglass units and sew everything back together. That worked for my block, and now it's 12.5 inches like it should be. Peace.

Sugary September

Here's my Sugar Block Club block for September. The block is called Encourage.

The block pattern was quite easy so it was a great one for right after the summer. Somehow it reminds me of spring (maybe it's the birds and the yellow nest-like print), so that's kind of strange for September but nevermind. It's sugary enough!

Here are my nine blocks. There will be only three more in this club. Time to start thinking about the setting of these blocks. 

Bold August Sugar Block

This month's sugar block is called Bold. I think the name fits the pattern very well. But I did manage to make it candylike if not sweet and sugary.

Sweet July Sugar Block

I had fun putting some summer sweetness into this month's sugar block. It's called Serve.

 

I put in some orange. To match my February block a bit (in this post I talked about that one not matching the others), and to match the Dutch national football (soccer) team who wear orange and are on a winning streak at the World Cup. Hup Holland Hup!!

Put some sugar in June

Here is my sugar block for June. It is called Teach and I made it extra sweet again. 

 Here are all my blocks so far.

When I put all the blocks together I feel I need to change the February block (the middle block on the right). The yellow seems too bright, almost orange. And the grey seems too harsh.

But I'll wait a few months. I might redo it or use fabric in the coming blocks so the February one will fit better.

Here is my Joy block, which is the May block in the Sugar Block Club

The block was made using foundation paper piecing which makes it quite accurate. It's fun to do, except taking off the paper at the end. The photo was taken with the paper still on, but in the meantime I have removed it.

Here is another FPP block I made recently. It was for Nikki in Bee Europa. 

I will have to get started on another FPP project, namely a sewing machine block for the new round of the Cocorico bee. Below is my design.

Now I have to translate that to fabric. Exciting and scary... I'll share more about it as soon as there is something to share...

Sugar Block April

It is a lovely beginning of the month: getting the email from the Sugar Block Club. I made the block almost straight away. It is called Presence.

These are all my Sugar Blocks up to now.

It's all looking very sugary I think. To make sure the blocks go together in the end, I think I will have to start repeating some of the fabrics. Right now the February block (lower right) stands out a bit, and some of the blue in the March block (top left) also needs repeating. It's fun to think about these things.
