In the Cocorico Bee Amy chose The Artist's Studio as the theme for her month (June). Very fun, colorful and versatile! I made a drawing of pots of paint in the primary colors with wooden sticks in them for stirring. The idea is that the heavy particles in the paint have gone to the bottom of the pots, leaving lighter colored water floating on top.
I had to think very very hard how to transfer this drawing to fabric. First I thought I would use freezer paper piecing, so I traced my drawing onto freezer paper. But all those tiny pieces that needed to be matched up scared me!!
Then I turned to good old measuring and piecing, and that worked. I did run into a tricky moment because the stirring sticks go through three layers of the pots but not the bottom layer (and I wanted continuous sticks and I wanted different levels for the bottom layer in each pot; I'll understand if not everybody gets how tricky this was, but it cost me a lot of thinking before I got my head around this bit). I left part of the seams between the sides of the pots and the background unsewn until after I added the bottom layer of the paint.
And here is the finished block. I love how it is a little bit wonky, just like my hand drawing. I hope Amy likes it as well!!
